Suhastha’21

“Suhastha” indeed can be named as one of the most valuable welfare events conducted by CES. Irrespective to the interrupts from pandemic situation, we could successfully organize “Suhastha” under two phases this time.

Phase 1: O/L Mathematics Seminar

Suhastha’21 was organized by level 2 students of the Civil Engineering Department with the guidance and contribution of senior batches and the academic staff. The support, sacrifice and the strong will of the lecturers and the well-wishers and the undergraduates strengthened Phase one of “Suhastha” ’21 and lead the event towards success even under the prevailing pandemic situation of the country.

Due to the covid-19 health issues we were not able to follow the usual Suhastha project, so we discussed and finalized of caring out the project under main two phases in accordance with the health guidelines provided. As the phase one, we planned a 5 day O/L mathematics seminar via Zoom platform in Sinhala, English and Tamil mediums. And as the phase two we planned of doing a book donation to two identified underprivileged schools.

The Mathematics seminar series was commenced from 31st January onwards till 4th February for 5 days, after collecting student registrations under the 3 selected mediums. 15+ volunteers was assigned for the 5 successive days for teachings students. On the five days target subject areas and the target model paper questions were discussed. Additional to those, tutorials under the relevant topics were also given for the students for further practice. Other than that motivational sessions, friendly sessions and ‘kahoot’ quizzes were also included. And the winners of those quizzes were awarded with the prizes.

There were nearly about 2000+ number of student registrations, 600+ participants for the Sinhala medium seminar, 200+ participants for the English medium seminar and 200+ participants for the Tamil medium seminar. On 4th of February the seminar series was concluded successfully bringing our hopes and the objectives we set into a reality.

 Phase 2: Book donation

A book donation program was carried out by the Civil Engineering Society of University of Moratuwa under the 2nd phase of "Suhastha" event for the year 2022. The book donation was planned to do for two selected underprivileged schools, but with the excess number of books collected we were able to expand the project up to three underprivileged schools. The books were collected island wide, assigning one representative per each district. On 10th of March 2022, we distributed the collected books for those schools under the guidance of the Civil Engineering Society. Other than the collected books, extra learning materials were also distributed.

Selected schools:

       Mulandiyawala Maha Vidyalaya, Middeniya-Panamure Road.

       Diyalape Vidyalaya, Akuressa

       Narandeniya national school, Kamburupitiya

The schools were selected under the following criteria.

       Lack of facilities.

       Educational standards.

       Distance from educational resources.

       Low exposure to technological trends.

        Requirements in renovating structures.

Through the book donation session we expected to overcome the following boundaries encountered by students:

Most of the underprivileged schools are away from the educational resources. So those schools are in need of a proper library.

Guiding the students in reaching subject related or non-related competencies.

It is one of the best methods for students in rural areas to see the world.

This special program can be mentioned as a very important event under CES. Through this important event, expected task could be completed successfully, bringing joy and satisfaction to everyone who participated.
