Suhastha – 2019

A person's most useful asset is not a head full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen and a hand willing to help others. The students and the staff of the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Moratuwa launched "Suhastha-2019", expanding their helpful hands and hearts to those in need.

Suhastha is annually organized with the objective of uplifting the quality standards of the underprivileged schools in Sri Lanka while strengthening the bond among the students of the civil engineering department. Suhastha is a lesson for the emerging civil engineers to know their responsibilities and enlighten the future of rural societies.

Suhastha-2019 was organized by level 2 students of the Civil Engineering Department with the guidance and contribution of senior batches and the academic staff. The monetary and materialistic donations of the lecturers and the well-wishers strengthened Suhastha-2019 and lead the event towards success. Since a week prior to the Suhastha launching day, a donations stall was maintained at the department entrance which gets filled with books and other stationery items, day by day.

Suhastha-2019 ran for three days marking golden pages in the diary of Civil Engineering Society.

On Friday, 29th November 2019 Civil ’17 batch left the university for MR/Siyambalagoda Maha Vidyalaya and MR/Hulandawa Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Pitabeddara with hands full of gifts bought by the donations of the helping hands.

All three days were spent with the kids of MR/Siyambalagoda M.V. with O/Level seminars, motivational sessions and interactive games. Meanwhile, school renovation programs were carried on. On the second day of Suhastha, half of the batch went for Hulandawa Tamil Maha Vidyalaya and an O/level seminar and desks and chairs painting program were conducted.

Everyone engaged in work enthusiastically despite the rain or shine, day or night – happily, together, as a family. Everyone’s dedication made the school buildings nicely color-washed, the incomplete class-blocks plastered.
The meals were prepared by the parents of Siyambalagoda M.V. Though we had discussed to provide groceries needed, the school afforded the expenses as a payment of gratitude.

The closing session was done at Siyambalagoda Maha Vidyalaya on the last day, 1st of December 2019 with the participation of school children, principal, staff and the parents. The school was gifted fictions and workbooks for the library, sporting equipment, stationaries, a printer, and other cleaning utensils. Every the kid was given a small gift and special gifts were presented for grade 9 and 10 students as well.

The emotional speeches of the principal, teachers and the students reflected how much value did Suhastha add to their lives.

Suhastha-2019 marked a successful ending bringing hopes of an enlightened future for all those, who the civil '17s spent those three days with. Every participant was too satisfied for words as there is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.

Civil ’17 batch extend their wholehearted gratitude to the academic staff and all the well-wishers for their guidance, contribution, and commitment in making Suhastha-2019 a massive success.

INSEE CONCRETE CHALLENGE - 2019

INSEE Cement, a leading Cement manufacturing industry in Sri Lanka organizes INSEE-IESL Concrete Challenge for the 6th consecutive year partnering with IESL, the apex body for professional engineers in Sri Lanka.
Furthering its vision of building brighter futures for Sri Lanka, this competition calls for innovative concrete mix designs from the final year students of state engineering universities; University of Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Jaffna, South Eastern, Jayawardanapura and Open University of Sri Lanka.

Among the objectives of the INSEE CONCRETE CHALLENGE, provision of an exposure to work with concrete and, use of knowledge and thinking ability to come up with solutions with the available resources are mainly focused.
This also aids in imparting practical and theoretical knowledge for a required design by fulfilling the cost and material optimization aspects.

The intra-university challenge for Civil Engineering students of university of Moratuwa was successfully held on 17th and 18th of August 2019 with the participation of 24 groups. This was organized by INSEE Company in collaborating with Civil Engineering Society of University of Moratuwa.
Expanding the limits of this vast opportunity, the applications were opened for level-2 students as well, gifting them an immense experience.

The event was organized with the supervision and assistance of staff coordinator Dr. H.M.Y.C. Mallikarachchi and the instructor coordinators Mr. Vishnu Punithavel and Ms. Sujeeka Nadarajah.

The competition was held under a set of guidelines and restrictions.
The participants were called by groups of five and they were supposed to submit a concrete mix proposal including all the aggregates and their proportions that they expect to be used. On 15th of August the competitors were organized a workshop to have a basic idea on correct procedure in calculating constituents and the methodical order in mixing them.

On 17th and 18th the groups were called to try out their proposals. The slump test and wet density test were done - cubes were casted and 7 days later, the cubes were tested for compressive strength.

The winners were selected following a specific selection criterion, where points were allocated for low cost, optimum material usage and test results of the tests underwent.

The best three groups were selected; the first winners were from 17’ batch while the second and third from 15’ batch. They will be representing University of Moratuwa in INSEE Inter University Challenge – 2019. This experience with countless memories and plenty more knowledge remarked a special page in Civil Diary of all the participants.

CIVIL APE AVURUDU -2019

When the blackbird begins his lonely serenade and his future wife trumpets a fluty duet on the neighboring tree wore in parsley-green, scattered with buds who blossom, we know the spring is here.
Spring wakes up minds with its creamy fresh smell and sensation. It has a fragrance, a life and a lilting coaction unique to itself which collaborates in composing its own symphony of sound.

With the scent of magic in the air carried by the frill of flowers, Department of Civil Engineering in University of Moratuwa accompanied with the spirit-refreshing scene of the spring in bringing the pastoral “CIVIL APE AVURUDU - 2019” recomposing the nature-composed-opera by adding the voice and rhyme of the Civil Family into the chorus.

On 04th of April 2019, sun arrived early to the Civil Department, the staffs of gangling light spouted from the sky turning the malachite-green Civil meadow into magical gold. The flora was energized with the rain by-gone night.  The civil front lawn was not just a lawn but a garden with a villa at a corner comprised of a ‘vee bissa’ and a cart. Civil building looked picturesque with a Kolam at the entrance which everyone busy stopped for a moment and had a look at.

At the auspicious time of 9.15 in the morning the owners of the villa ‘Arachchila’ and ‘Gama Mahage’ welcomed all the members of the civil family to the occasion blessing all the university community a happy and prosperous new year with boiling a pot of milk. The chief-guests to the occasion, the gigantic banister of the Department of Civil Engineering, academic staff remarked the commencement of the event lighting the traditional oil lamp. Then the time came for the opening of the “Avurudu Kema Mesaya”,   spring foods with a blossom sweet taste, the scent of the sweets flew in the air, stimulating the taste nerves.

Tamil rituals added more elegance to the event, and everyone participated to them enthusiastically.

The day was delighted with the presence of head of the department prof. S.A.S.Kulathilaka, former head of the department prof. J.M.S.J. Bandara and many more other lecturers and instructors representing the academic staff. The students were more tuned up by the energy added by them in participating ‘Avurudu Jana Krida’.

Entertaining the onlookers, a group of girls and boys from ’17 batch performed a dancing item, splendid, charming and delightful.
The day was full of fun events including almost all the fun games in a traditional Avurudu ceremony. It was a great opportunity to the civil family to get together and enjoy, a day free from the busy working schedule.

"Civil Ape Avurudu" was a day remarked in Civil Diary as a day filled with happiness, cheer, delight and joy. The beautiful smile, the members of the civil family had in their faces on this day would last long and the year ahead is blessed to be the best year in everyone’s life with everything best coming into their lives!
