A person's most useful asset is not a head full
of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen and a hand
willing to help others. The students and the staff of the Department of Civil
Engineering of University of Moratuwa launched "Suhastha-2019", expanding
their helpful hands and hearts to those in need.
Suhastha is annually
organized with the objective of uplifting the quality standards of the
underprivileged schools in Sri Lanka while strengthening the bond among the
students of the civil engineering department. Suhastha is a lesson for the
emerging civil engineers to know their responsibilities and enlighten the future
of rural societies.
Suhastha-2019 was
organized by level 2 students of the Civil Engineering Department with the
guidance and contribution of senior batches and the academic staff. The
monetary and materialistic donations of the lecturers and the well-wishers
strengthened Suhastha-2019 and lead the event towards success. Since a week
prior to the Suhastha launching day, a donations stall was maintained at the
department entrance which gets filled with books and other stationery items, day by day.
Suhastha-2019 ran for
three days marking golden pages in the diary of Civil Engineering Society.
On Friday, 29th November
2019 Civil ’17 batch left the university for MR/Siyambalagoda Maha Vidyalaya
and MR/Hulandawa Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Pitabeddara with hands full of gifts
bought by the donations of the helping hands.
All three days were
spent with the kids of MR/Siyambalagoda M.V. with O/Level seminars,
motivational sessions and interactive games. Meanwhile, school renovation
programs were carried on. On the second day of Suhastha, half of the batch went
for Hulandawa Tamil Maha Vidyalaya and an O/level seminar and
desks and chairs painting program were conducted.
Everyone engaged in
work enthusiastically despite the rain or shine, day or night – happily,
together, as a family. Everyone’s dedication made the school buildings nicely
color-washed, the incomplete class-blocks plastered.
The meals were prepared
by the parents of Siyambalagoda M.V. Though we had discussed to provide
groceries needed, the school afforded the expenses as a payment of gratitude.
The closing session was done at Siyambalagoda Maha Vidyalaya on the last day, 1st of
December 2019 with the participation of school children, principal, staff and
the parents. The school was gifted fictions and workbooks for the library,
sporting equipment, stationaries, a printer, and other cleaning utensils. Every the kid was given a small gift and special gifts were presented for grade 9 and 10
students as well.
Civil ’17 batch extend
their wholehearted gratitude to the academic staff and all the well-wishers for
their guidance, contribution, and commitment in making Suhastha-2019 a massive
success.
