Suhastha '15

“Suhatha - 2015” was successfully concluded on 14^th and 15^th of November 2015 on Walimada area targeting ordinary level students in the area by the 13^th batch Civil Department. This was one of the most effective and best programs concluded by the Civil Engineering society of University of Moratuwa during this year. Previous year the seminar series was initiated to conduct in two languages in Sinhalese and Tamil. This year the same tradition was continued. The Sinhala seminar was at Nadhagamuwa Maha Viddayala with the participation of another Sinhala school ‘Landegama Maha viddyala’ and the Tamil seminar was at Walimada Tamil Viddyala with the participation of six Tamil medium schools.

When the idea was came upon it was not only to the seminar and come back, but there must be something other than doing the seminar. Something will remain in the minds of the students for so many years. Because of that it was suggested to donate books to the two libraries of the schools.

We planned to do seminars for three subjects for “Science, English, and Mathematics” which foe our knowledge was the weakest of the students in the area. We understood that discussing a paper was not enough because of that a tutorial was arranged for the benefit of the children to do at home. It was arranged covering all the parts of the syllabus and giving priority to important parts in the syllabus

.

Although most of the planning was done easily funding the project was bit difficult. In order to do so a ticket was sold among the pubic to collect donations from the people. All the colleagues of 13^th batch Civil Department helped in funding this. 

The schools were bit far away from the Walimada town and reaching the schools were bit difficult. But the beauty of the nature made us forget all the difficulties we had.

The seminars were due to start at 8am onward until 4pm afternoon. The first day was planned to do seminar on science and English and the second date was focused on Mathematics.

Separate papers for each subtopics of the science subject was given and three different colleagues conducted the seminar and others were helping to do so. After the seminar tutorials were distributed to the students for practice until the exams.

Due to lack of time English seminar was as a two part seminar and 1^st part and the evening of the first day and morning at the second date. 1^st day it was mainly about grammar and 2^nd day was about how to collect marks easily and the parts that should have a special care.

The main target was on the second date was mathematics and important points were discussed firstly and later every student was given a mentor to improve their knowledge and to reduce the mistakes of those children. Weaker students were given special attention rather than learning new things they were taught to reduce the mistakes there were doing. 

All together there were 30 or 40 groups which was more effective.

At the end a mentoring program was held for students and questions about their life were answered and ways to build up their life after the exams, what are the possibilities and new opportunities of life were introduced.

At the end after a simple ceremony books were given to the principles of the two schools. The principle in his speech thanks all the organizers for their massive effort and dedicating their useful time on these children. He encouraged us to do there seminars all around the country. And also told that he will monitor the children on doing the tutorials.

On behalf of the students of the school the head prefect thanks all the organizers for choosing a rural school like theirs and promised that they will do their best on the upcoming exams.

 A parent in his speech thanked everyone with for helping their children and most of them are farmers and society think that their children should be farmers after them. 

But we changed that attitude on their mind. We requested the students to give a feedback on our seminar and everyone were thankful for our cause and encouraged us to carry on in big scale.

We are hoping an improvement on their life and their studies and we are hoping to do the same next year with a much more advanced plan with the experiences gained from this project.

All together this can be said as the most successful project done by the Civil 13^th batch and we are hoping to continue this humanitarian projects. And thankful for all the colleagues who helped in organizing participating for this project.

 

Civil Cricket Fiesta

University of Moratuwa is a leading university when it comes to modeling world class engineers.
Department of Civil Engineering plays a leading role in that matter. A good engineer must not be someone with just an engineering skill.








He must be an all-rounder. With that thought in mind Civil Engineering Society of University of Moratuwa organized a cricket tournament for the undergraduates of the department of civil engineering. It was held on 31st of  July 2015 from 8 am onwards in the university ground premises.
This event comes annually and the main organizing part comes from all students in the Civil Engineering department.

Two teams consisting of boys & a girls’ team from each level participated in the contest. Everyone was thrilled & excited about the tournament. Tournament was organized as a league tournament. 11 players each for a team and 5 overs each for a team. Event went on till the evening, there was much competition and finally level 4 team won the tournament.
Though there was competition and aggression it was only for the games. Everyone could see the brotherhood within the civil family. Everybody got together as one family and enjoyed the event very much.
Everyone played their part level 01 students were given the responsibility of decorating the pavilion for the event and carrying out the poster campaign which they did excellently. They were also entrusted with providing event with refreshment with soft drinks.
Level 04 students took much of the responsibility and organized the whole event.

Senior lecturer prof.Jayasinghe & prof(Mrs.) Jayasinghe were present for the presentation ceremony. Prof Jayasinghe in his brief speech at the awards ceremony gave the students so much advice.






He highly appreciated organizing such events giving everyone some opportunity to free themselves from the academic workload even for one day. Furthermore he went on to give some advice to the students, how they should forge their path to the success as an engineer & he specially talked about the current position of civil engineering in the country and what would become of it in the near future. Those thoughts were really enlightening. Then prof(Mrs.) Jayasinghe participated in giving away the awards to the winners.

Nevertheless they got an award or not everyone had a smile on their faces. After all this at the end everyone danced to the DJ music.

Civil Ape Aurudhu

The exconal bondepti that humans share with their environment has long been proven to be a strong and sensitive one, and with the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, the celestial bodies have shifted once again and nature has begun yet another lapse of an year, celebrating with the stunning bloom of a myriad of variety of flowers amidst the welcoming calling of the cuckoo. As a tradition, alongside all these exquisite events, Sri Lankans choose to synchronize with nature  and hold New Year festivals around the country and come close to their family than and other time in the year. The Civil Engineering family,  too, were part of the thrilling festivities on the 21st of April at the Civil Engineering Deparment.The Civil Engineering students of the 13 batch gave their best to make this event colourful and one of the most successful events in the university.  Amongst the many decorations The Tamil brothers and sisters beautified this event further with their traditional “kolan chithra”.

With the arrival of the Vice Chancellor of our university, Prof Ananda Jayawardane, the festival kicked off adhering to our traditional customs.

The traditional food table was declared open and the lighting of the oil lamp was done by the  Vice Chancellor of our university, Prof Ananda Jayawardane prof nanayakkara together with alla the staff members of the civil engineering department.

Thereafter. After all the guest invitees present had nourished themselves well, the table was opened to all those gracing the occasion and soon the aurudu games started, starting with the marathon and so on and so forth.

It was clear that the participants as well as the spectators were truly enjoying traditional playing of drums.

The “kana mutti” event was paid special attention by the guest invitees and a fabulous dance session was performed by a talented team from the 13 batch as a sequel. 

With one of the more vibrant attractions being the swing, it attracted children present in addition to the guest present at this festival.Sports events were organized with open invitation to all members of other departments. The “pani bambara” which could be classified as a major highlight of the festival caused many outbreaks of hysterical laughter of the spectators.

Although rain caused a bit of a dilemma, the organizing committee brilliantly managed to overcome any obstacles posed to ensure the smooth flow of the event. Hence some of the originally planned outdoor events were shifted to the lobby of the Civil Engineering main building. A “balloon dance” was held and as usual the winners were awarded with valuable prizes by the three of the 13 batch representatives and two members of CES.

A “padura” was conducted with innumerable crowd on this day, which could only be described as memorable. This was proudly the first event organized by the CES and 13 batch and it was done and dusted in a remarkable manner. Organizing this event made the 13 batch shine their talent for any such future outstanding events and this is only the beginning of many more to come.

Minutes of the CES meeting held on 26^th of March 2015

The first meeting of the Civil Engineering Society for the year 2015 was initiated on the 26th of March, 2015 at 11.15 a.m. main objective of this meeting was to elect new office bearers for 2015. The meeting was conducted by Mr. Tharindu Haputhanthri, former president of CES with the presence of Prof. S.M.A. Nanayakkara (Head of the department),Dr. J.M.A. Manatunge (Academic Advisor) and Dr. L. I. N. De Silva (Senior Treasurer of CES).At first he invited to the Mr.Gayan Hewage, former secretary to read the minutes of the last meeting.

Newly appointed President welcomed all the guests and the objectives  of  the society were  presented to the audience. Then Prof. S.M.A. Nanaykkara was invited to address the audience.

Prof S.M.A. Nanayakkara started talking by congratulating the newly appointed committee. Then he talked about the importance of having the society. Further he stated, as student how we can enjoy our time at the university and the importance of participating in extra-curricular activities, and also the need of having AGMs. By finishing his speech there, he told students how important the unity among batches.

Prof. S.M.A. Nanaykkara’s speech was followed by Dr. J.M.A. Manatunge. Dr. J.M.A. Manatunge talked about the history  of  the  society  and  how  it  was  started in 1990 as the  1st ever  engineering society at University of Moratuwa. Further he said how it was developed under many obstacles and the things which the society has done throughout the past decades.

Next Dr. L.I.N. De Silva talked about the current financial position of CES. It was stated in his speech that currently there are Rs.500, 000 worth of cash equivalence in CES accounts. Also reminded about the agreements which are to be renewed during this year.
